Following the biggest PlayStation Store launch ever for a Call of Duty game (including pre-orders and day one sales), Microsoft Xbox’s Phil Spencer has yet again iterated the company's intention to keep the Call of Duty titles available on PlayStation consoles.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was made available for PS4 and PS5 in late October 2022. This undoubtedly resurrected discussions about Microsoft's plans to acquire COD publisher, Activision Blizzard. Naturally, Spencer had to reassure gamers everywhere that the title would continue to stay on rival Sony's console.
In an interview with the Same Brain YouTube channel, Spencer insisted that as long as there's a PlayStation console, Microsoft would continue to ship Call of Duty for the device. No need to start a poll to see whether all the PlayStation-owning COD fans breathed a collective sigh of relief on cue.
Spencer went on to imply that maximum worldwide distribution of similarly popular titles such as Minecraft was in the company's best interests. However, hawk-eyed audiences may have picked up on a report in September 2022 which noted that PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan pointed out Microsoft's promise to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for three years beyond the current agreement between Activision and Sony as being "inadequate on many levels."
Currently, the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal is being examined by the UK Competition and Markets authority, as well as in the City of New York and the US Justice Department.
